　　BARBARA NEWMAN, author of The Covenant: Love and Death in

Beirut, is a senior fellow with the Foundation for the Defense of

Democracies and is the founder of Barbara Newman Productions, Inc.,

which has produced numerous documentary films for Discovery

Channel, A&E Network, the History Channel, and Showtime, among

others. She was senior producer/creator of the Now It Can Be Told

series, a nationally syndicated newsmagazine, and, before that, an

investigative producer for ABC News’s 20/20. She was also a

correspondent for National Public Radio and hosted All Things

Considered.

　　TOM DIAZ is the author of Making a Killing: The Business of Guns

in America. From 1993 to 1997 he was the lead Democratic counsel on

counterterrorism issues, helping to write key antiterrorism

legislation. He has recently served as a consultant to the U.S.

Department of Justice on the use of high technology by terrorists

and as law-enforcement investigative tools. As a reporter he has

covered conflicts and tensions in Central America, India, Pakistan,

the former Soviet Union, and the closing days of the 1991 Gulf

War.

  工业革命30多年后，法国大革命3年后，恰逢乾隆80大寿，英使访华。这段日子，读西方史会感觉在读近代史，读中国史会感觉在读古代史，中西已在两个世界。这是科技飞跃的差距，也是政治制度飞跃的差距，一条现代与古代的鸿沟分裂了两边。

  西方资本主义已在英法胜利，美国建国已大半世纪，民主、自由已遍地开花，无产阶级的力量已在积蓄，科技蓬勃发展，火车早已飞驰半个世纪。他们的价值观与今天的价值观已大致相似。

  我们的国家正在“康乾盛世”，皇权顶峰，十全武功，继续享受着中央王国的虚幻，所谓的四大发明早已在千年之前，价值观依然忠臣孝子，。历史还是编年体和纪传体，记皇权大事，为大人立传，尚无经济、社会、文化、风俗、地理、农业和科技的专门史。

  英使马戛尔尼使华让我们有了一种现代习惯的方式来看过去的自己，从专门的角度。

  马戛尔尼来华两件事，一是通商，二是考察。

  从结果看，通商失败了，甚至没有谈的机会，但清朝应是知道其目的，故意委婉拒绝，也已经知道英国的大体实力及占领印度、锡兰的事实，故对英使团是重视和礼貌的，以及防备。在考察方面，则应说很好的完成任务了，对中国的经济、社会、文化、军事和政治制度均有详细的记录，虽有些地方有所偏颇，但大体真实客观，可说是严谨的田野调查了，也为今天我们了解清朝留下了十分难得的第一手资料。

  这次使华的影响对包括英国在内的西方世界来说是震撼性的、颠覆性的，客观上直接改变了西方世界对中国的认知，大约是一个从崇敬到鄙视的过程，甚至没有平视的中间地带，其所带来的对我们国家未来命运的影响是深远的。而对当时的清朝来说，这次英使访华则像一粒尘埃掉入死海，甚至没有激起一丝涟漪。所以有人评论说马戛尔尼访华是中西的碰撞，恕我不敢苟同，因为碰撞是双发的，而此次则是单向的。

  而我认真读完后，尤其是使团随员巴罗的详细考察后，感受到无论是在制度上、科技上、价值观上，中西已在两个次元，无法再相提并论，而原因我想有几点可能很重要。

  首先，“民可使由之，不可使知之”（此处不讨论孔子这句话释义的争论，进就普遍认可的意思而言）的这种愚民政策，其唯一的目的在于稳固统治，导致普通人民自由的普遍缺乏，同时又严重的扼杀了好奇心和欲望，使人完全安于现状，摒弃了冒险精神，导致不再思考其他可能性，进而永远维持了原状。

  其次，就是缺乏普遍的专业化教育，没有系统性的学校，没有任何一项艺术、科学门类或技艺的理论体系建立，且制度上固定了一种学说即儒家学说的唯一化，完全摒弃了比如农业、手艺、医学等的专业化教育。最后，则是重农轻商，商包括商人、手艺人，打压其进入社会系统的最底层，是社会变成了简单的二元结构，读书，读儒家的书从而为统治阶级服务，农民，食物的生产者，打算江山永固，万年不变。

  此外，就是儒家如法律般道德的束缚，如中世纪的天主教扼杀了可能性和多样性。以及皇权日盛，相权衰落，到清所人都成了奴才，皇权失去了制约，人民的奴性日深，也是一个重要原因。

  归根到底，就是没有鼓励起个人的创造性。而西方的崛起，归根到底是文艺复兴开始的对人的重视，开始向人而非神寻找和实现价值。而这又要归结到偶然出现的希腊文明的民主自由遗产。

  书中内容的一些偏见，需要宽容的看待，人都有其历史局限性，我认为一个先进文明看待落后文明，有这种客观程度已经非常难得，总是要比我们落后了还自封天朝上国，对别人优势视而不见的愚蠢的自大傲慢要好不知多少倍了。但我还是要说，当时西方的医学也十分落后，与中医比只能说半斤八两；另一个就是习俗，这方面怎么说呢，习俗则是因族而已，无可厚非。

  另外一些给我印象深刻的就是，普遍的赤贫，尤其是北方地区，北京周边的赤贫；以及广州长久的对外通商历史，最后就是恶劣的卫生习惯和生活舒适性的落后，包括上等阶层。

  最后，还想说一句绘画，我们的国画确实又意境，但在真实性和颜料的运用上，也是差距太大，油画可以真实如照片，也可以讲意境，已有完整的光影及原料的理论体系，我们则只有意境。

  军事也不说了，刀剑和枪炮的区别（虽有枪炮，但无大规模生产，这也是工业革命的后果，没有标准化大规模生产的能力）。

• 提醒大家注意一本伪书《中国健康调查报告》[转]

  偶尔看到一位中医粉丝在自己的博客里转载一本书的内容，这本书的中文名叫做《中国健康调查报告》，原版为英文，作者T. Colin Campbell，是康奈尔大学的营养学教授。因为这位中医粉丝转载的大多是对现代医学局限性的渲染之词，因此特意从网上检索了这本书的情况，包括中文和英文，同时还对原作者的专业文章进行了初步的检索。以下是检索的结果：

  首先，中文版的书籍宣传存在着严重的夸大虚假内容。举例如下：

  第一、宣传将Colin Campbell称作“营养学界的爱因斯坦”，提出这种说法的中文网页无一例外是这本书的宣传，英文网页的检索中唯一出现作者名和Einstein的只有作者现场演讲的DVD销售宣传页面，并且即便是这个页面也没有直接把Campbell称作Einstein。

  第二、宣传中提到《纽约时报 》对这本书丝毫不亚于大陆媒体宣传领导的褒奖，经过对New York Times网站的搜索，提到Colin Campbell的只有短短一句话，没有任何表扬的意思，不知道是不是在广告版面上有，我不知道。

  第三、宣传中提到的诺贝尔奖得主康奈尔大学的理查森教授，为诺贝尔物理学奖得主之一，中文宣传中说理查森给这本书给出了高度评价，但经过搜索，英文网页中将Richardson和Campbell放在一个页面上的网页几乎查不到，偶尔有显示的也丝毫没有提到前者对后者的评价。

  我没有亲眼看过这本书，所以对书中的观点还无法评价，但牛奶对人体有害，动物蛋白可以致癌这类结论恐怕都用不着专业人士来批评，动物食品厂商的愤怒就足够了。这似乎是地瓜博士的祖师爷了，经过回顾地瓜博士也确实经常引用这位康奈尔大学教授的理论。

  这本书的作者还是发表了不少专业文章的，在Pubmed检索可以查到很多， 但是对这本书的批评倒是找得到，其中有一点引起我的注意，尽管题为《The China Study》，但书中只有不到四分之一的篇幅和中国有关。比较全面的可见这一网页，有兴趣的可以全文翻译出来，本人没有时间，还请读者见谅：

  hohu送给我过这本书，并且帮我查过作者发表的研究论文，可惜这段时间忙着打酱油打醋没有细看。

  因为作者是曾发现二恶英的学者，所以我没有对其数据有任何怀疑。我比较怀疑的是书中转述几篇文章，都是动物实验统计证明酪蛋白有促癌作用，没有机制方面的描述，而假如酪蛋白真有那样明显的生物学效应，搞清楚作用机制会是非常有趣也非常有意义的事情—–想想看，逃过胃肠消化仍然起效并且到达某个剂量后是100%起效的小肽段或蛋白或氨基酸衍生物！！不过我没来得及细看hohu发给我的原文，不敢说那几篇文章都是同一水平的重复而没有深入研究机制，但书中的转述的确给我这种感觉。

  而且用中国的大规模社会调查数据与国外比对，偏向于或仅仅用饮食结构来解释二者的差别，也觉得至少是考虑得不够周全。

  书中转述其研究论文中有研究摄入的酪蛋白与某些抑癌因子（或促癌因子？？癌基因？？记不太清楚了）的活性有明显对应关系——-但我觉得这不叫机制研究—–倘若能分析到底是酪蛋白中哪些成分或结构，通过哪种途径影响到了体内的这些因子，这才是有意义的机制研究。
