  Doris Lessing narrates an inexplicable tragic story of a female character Susan Rowling, a middle-aged full-time housewife from an affluent middle-class family. Many critics claim that the male-dominant society is the underlying root of Susan’s failure and death. They think Susan’s suicide is a reflection of women’s struggle in a patriarchal society. But I think the death of Susan reflects the psychological weakness of housewife in the society, and the marital discord is caused by both of the Rowling couple.

  At the beginning of their marriage, they are perfectly compatible for each other, both had well-paid jobs, both had pleasant flats, they were similar in lifestyles, they played the same role who can be relied on for their virtue of their moderation, their humor, and their abstinence from painful experience. It seemed they were born to be together. They played a balanced role at the very beginning of their marriage. However, after pregnant with the first baby, Susan Rowling, a well-educated, intelligent woman, quitted her job to be a full-time housewife. All of these were considered to be natural and sensible for any family. But the problem is that Susan lost ego identity. She couldn’t find her worth. In her life, the four kids, her husband and their big gardened-house had been her only possession and value. Taking care of them became her top priority. She became the accessory of her husband from an excellent independent women. So when Matthew had one-night affair with a young girl, Susan felt restless and obsessed. In the novel, it’s said that Susan recognized that she had lost herself, and she tried to escape from her family and her husband to regain freedom and peace in room nineteen of a shabby hotel. But I think Susan had never recognized her problem, and room nineteen wasn’t a place that could provide freedom and peace for her, it’s just a refuge where she could escape from all the discord in her marriage. She didn’t have courage to face and solve the problems because she was afraid to lose all she possessed. In fact, Susan had several chances to escape from the constraint of family. Her husband agreed to find an au pair girl to take care of the kids, and she was free to do what she wanted to do. But when her husband asked: “Are you thinking of going back to work?” She said “No!” It means that she had no pursuit in career. Maybe in male-dominant society, after marriage, even women think they are bounded to family, and they lost the ambition in career and they don’t want to achieve their dreams, or besides a happy family, women don’t have other dreams at all. In such a society, family is the only end-result and final focus of women. With this kind of thoughts, Susan didn’t dare to communicate with Matthew because she had no confidence to face the result of breakdown.

  In traditional male-dominant society, it’s normal for men to earn money and women to care about the families. It’s not easy to change the intra-household labor division. But housewives themselves should never look down upon themselves. Whatever role you play in the family, you are equal in your marriage.

  而真正的男权社会不是男性限制了女性的活动和自由，将其囿于家庭的牢笼，而是在思想上控制女性，连女性自己也认为自己应该忠于家庭，成为丈夫的附属品。我一直认为Susan是被自己作死的，是的，她的死亡和她自己确实有分不开的联系，但女性思想的固步自封难道不是男权社会最大的悲哀吗？
