　　Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

　　After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

　　Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

  大家好，我是张亚，我收到一位热心读者phil的来信，指出了本书第四章（p89页）一个翻译的不太准确的地方，在这里特别和各位更正一下，也欢迎大家提出更多宝贵意见。

  （Everything fades; alternatives exclude.）在原书中我翻译成

  “除了选择，一切都会消失” ，是想当然的把存在主义关于选择的理念加在这里了，不太准确。

  此处原文出自《格兰德尔》这部小说：

  The ultimate evil is that Time is perpetual perishing, and being actual involves elimination. The nature of evil may be epitomized, therefore, in two simple but horrible propositions: 'Things fade' and 'Alternatives exclude.' Such is His mystery: that beauty requires contrast, and that discord is fundamental to the creation of new intensities of feeling.

  终极的邪恶便是时间永远在流逝，现实生活中的一切都孕育着消亡。因而，邪恶的本质可以概括于两个简单但可怕的命题，即“一切都会消失”、“选择彼此相互排斥”。 真谛便是：美需要有对比，这种不一致是创造新的感情强度的基础。

  （试着翻译一下，不知道是否有更好的版本）

  'Things fade' and 'Alternatives exclude.' 这两句是并列的关系，而不是其他关系。前者是“一切都会消失”，后者是“选择彼此相互排斥”的意思。

  我觉得热心读者phil的翻译“一切都会消失；选择彼此相互排斥”更符合原书上下文的意思。
